Our Story

Deltona Presbyterian Church (DPC) began as a mission of the Central Florida Presbytery and First Presbyterian Church of DeBary in the early 1970s, when Deltona was just beginning to flourish. Drawn by the area’s promise and tranquility, hundreds of retirees settled in what many called “a little bit of heaven.

Following the Presbytery’s recommendation to establish a congregation in Deltona, the Session of DeBary Presbyterian Church voted in 1973 to sponsor the new mission and appointed a Pastoral and Meeting Place Search Committee. On June 27, 1974, the Rev. Dr. William Sloan McKee received a call to organize the emerging congregation. Through the generosity of the Southland Corporation, worship services were held rent-free in a vacant 7-Eleven store on Elkcam Boulevard—where Burger King stands today. The congregation gathered there for its very first worship service on September 8, 1974.

The church’s first baptism occurred on March 2, 1975, when Dr. McKee baptized twin sisters Amy Calista and Elizabeth Ann, daughters of Will and Joan Euverard, who remain faithful founding members of DPC today. As the number of members increased, it became evident that a more permanent and spacious home was needed. When the Southland Corporation announced that the 7-Eleven building had been leased, the congregation prepared to relocate. In January 1975, the Presbytery approved a $50,000 grant for construction, and the Mackle Brothers Corporation generously donated a 5.4-acre parcel at the corner of Howland Boulevard and Austin Avenue.

Groundbreaking for the new church took place on February 6, 1976. That summer, the congregation held its first worship service in the newly built, mortgage-free sanctuary—affectionately known as “the little redwood church nestled in the pine trees”—on August 22, 1976. The Presbytery officially chartered the congregation on September 14, 1976, and Dr. McKee was installed as DPC’s first pastor. The first wedding, uniting Mr. Reid Wells and Ms. Cynthia Ann Cromer, was celebrated on January 19, 1977, at its present location.

As membership grew, additional facilities were constructed to support Christian education and fellowship. New classrooms, a children’s Bible study area, a library, and a larger sanctuary surrounded the original redwood chapel.

In 1997, the Family Life Center was completed, providing space for fellowship, recreation, and community events. Today, the Family Life Center also hosts interfaith small groups such as Alcoholics Anonymous, provides worship space for another congregation, and accommodates an independent community preschool that serves local families.

DPC History

Over the years, DPC became a spiritual home where families worshiped together, served their neighbors, and nurtured faith across generations. The Rev. Joe Gasper was called in 1987 and served for thirteen years, guiding the congregation through a vibrant season that included drama ministries, musical productions, and creative pageants celebrating the joy of worship. In 2002, the Rev. Tom Warren became pastor, serving faithfully for four years. Later, in 2008, Commissioned Pastor John McLaurin was called to provide spiritual leadership. Under his ministry, DPC expanded its outreach through Vacation Bible School, multimedia resources, a new church website, and diverse fellowship opportunities.

Congregation Worship

Since 2022, several pastors have provided transitional leadership, including the Rev. Stacy Chandler, the Rev. Chris Chandler, and the Rev. Dr. Carmelo Mercado. Each has contributed to the congregation’s ongoing renewal and vision for ministry.

Special Memories

Through the decades, both the church and the Deltona community have experienced many changes. Yet DPC continues its journey of faith, seeking to understand God’s purposes for the church and for each believer. We strive to grow in knowledge of Scripture, to live out God’s character, and to discern how God is calling us to serve in Deltona and beyond. With the Holy Spirit guiding our steps, this remains an inspiring season in the life of our congregation.

Fellowship and Food Service

The fellowship of DPC is strong and grace-filled. Our faith journey continues to open new paths for service, worship, and compassionate outreach. Through our church-sponsored Food Pantry, DPC offers practical help to those in need—feeding 1,400 families every month, supported by a dedicated team of engaged volunteers.

Burning of the Mortgage

In May 2026, DPC reached a significant and joyful milestone by becoming completely debt-free, retiring its mortgage two years ahead of schedule. The moment was celebrated with a meaningful “Burning of the Mortgage” ceremony, giving thanks to God for faithful stewardship across generations. This achievement not only enhanced the church’s capacity to expand its missional outreach, but also positioned DPC for long-term financial strength and stability. In response, DPC has taken a forward-looking step by establishing Investment Funds, including a balanced fund designed at promoting lasting sustainability and generating steady income to support future ministry initiatives.

Ministry often happens quietly—in caring conversations, thoughtful phone calls, and personal visits—reflecting Christ’s love in tangible ways.
